Rosetta Stone Spanish uses the immersion method to teach you a foreign language. Basically, it throws you right into the Spanish words and your only guide as to what it translates to in English is a photograph. 95% of the time this works well and the pictures make it very clear what is being indicated. However, sometimes the photos do not clearly illustrate what is going on and there is no way to get the English translation from Rosetta Stone. This is what I consider Rosetta Stone’s biggest fault. For some items I had to use Google to find out exactly what was going on in the photo by having Google translate the text for me. Outside of that snafu, the immersion method works well. Not only does the Rosetta Stone package come with the computer program discs, but also included are audio companion discs (that ask you to repeat words and phrases) that you play in the car or rip to your MP3 player. Moreover, there is an iPhone app you can download that works by having you repeat words and phrasing along with their corresponding photos. The most important part of Rosetta’s immersion technique is that you are constantly working on learning the language. If you want to be successful at this you must use the computer and companion CDs a few times a week or you’ll forget things very quickly, and never become truly fluent.

The computer-based lessons vary from repeating words and phrases, to matching photos with text, to answering and asking question, and typing items. When you complete a section you do a milestone, which simulates a conversation between yourself and other people. You’ll also be prompted to repeat earlier lessons from time to time to review what you’ve already learned and keep it fresh.

The software is easy to install and use. I had no problems figuring my way around or getting started. I installed it on a MacBook (circa 2006) running Snow Leopard. Included with Rosetta Stone is a USB headset with a boom microphone, which I suggest you use over a microphone that may be built into your computer already. I tried using my MacBook’s built-in microphone, but it was nowhere near as accurate as the included headset in picking up my voice.

In addition to all of the tools that I’ve already mention a trial period of one year of online games and courses is available. Native Spanish speakers teach the courses and you schedule a time to take them. The games you can do anytime, and they are fun and diverse.

So the most important part of this review is… Have I learned Spanish? Well, as of this point I am confident in my ability to read and understand basic concepts and ideas, but I’m still not a strong speaker. I’ve spent many hours using the software and I’ve only made a small dent in all that Rosetta Stone has to teach me. I’m getting there, but I’ve still got a long way to go. I, however, was always poor at foreign language in school, so your mileage will vary.

All in all…if you’ve got the dedication, then you’ve got a fun and easy way to learn Spanish in Rosetta Stone.

Family pack is a fantastic value

The price of the family pack makes this a no brainer. You get license to install on 5 computers in the same household for a price less than two individual copies of Snow Leopard. And the OS itself is fantastic, below is my review of the OS itself:

I installed the family edition tonight on two laptops, a MacBook and MacBook Pro. It is immediately obvious the new Finder is worth the price of admission alone. Finder windows open and close quickly, there’s no annoying pauses and hangs. File copies are dramatically faster; no more need for power users to use a third party tool or drop into Terminal to copy files quickly. Time Machine backups are indeed faster, my old applications still work fine. When I opened a PowerPC app that needed Rosetta, Snow Leopard went to the Internet to download Rosetta–no need to dig out a DVD.

My primary applications–Photoshop CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, OmniGraffle Pro, PowerPoint 2008, Word 2008, Flex Builder, Eclipse, FireFox, VMware Fusion–all seem to work just fine.

So I see no reason not to upgrade: The speed improvements, the painless installation, and most significantly, the much-improved Finder make this a bargain of an upgrade.

And that’s ignoring all the cool technologies under the hood (discussed in other reviews) and the small details that have been added (signal strength icons of wireless networks in the AirPort menu, for example).

Its Apple OSX, Nothing More Needs to be Said!!

People always get excited for OS upgrades and rightfully so given how much time we now spend in front of computers. Its also no secret that expectations for Mac OSX upgrades are always sky high. Its the best OS in the world so people expect Apple to continue pushing the envelope and they rarely if ever disappoint. With that being said I expect that a lot of people will ultimately be disappointed with Snow Leopard simply because this is really not like any of the previous OSX upgrades. With all of the previous upgrades Apple unleashed hundreds of powerful tools and upgrades and in so doing each iteration was obviously much better than the previous versions. The problem with Snow Leopard is that instead of concentrating on creating new tools or doing serious work on the user interface, Apple has instead chosen to pretty much leave things as be and instead focus on performance. So because of this a lot of people will see very little difference between Leopard and snow leopard, at least not as much of a difference as they have seen with previous updates. Hence the reason why I expect some will be disappointed.

Should People be disappointed, absolutely not. In fact I tip my hat to Apple for choosing to go this direction with this upgrade. Then again things are much different today than they were 4-5 years ago. Apple is doing amazingly well right now in regards to getting new customers. In fact I just saw some statistics a couple days ago that showed that almost 50% of the people who bought a Mac last quarter were people who had never purchased an Apple before. They are absolutely eating up market share. This combined with the complete and utter failure of Windows Vista has really taken the pressure off of Apple, at least in regards to the development of new features for its OS. In other words they don’t feel like they have to create something flashy and new. They are instead focusing on really tightening down the screws and getting OSX to a new level performance wise and that of course is all about making OSX 64 bit throughout.

The other thing that makes this update different from previous updates is that it isnt for everyone. This is the first time that the entire Mac community may not upgrade. This upgrade is only for Intel processor Macs. That means that anyone who is still using a G3, G4 or G5 is now stuck at 10.5. Your days of OS upgrades are over. I know that there are some Apple users out there that were really disappointed by this decision however it was without a doubt the proper decision. The future of Apple is with Intel and this really allows them to focus on the future and make this OS all it can be. Making this OS compatible with older Macs would be a complete and utter waste of resources. People who have older Macs can still use 10.5 so its not like they are screwed. 10.5 is more than good enough for older Macs. If you want to run 10.6, buy a new Mac.

I wont bother discussing the details of Snow Leopard as there are already a couple of reviews up that do a good job of discussing the new features. I will simply say that if you have an intel Mac then you wont want to miss this one. It may not have all the bells and whistles of past updates but it has something even more important in my book. It has power and a level of stability that other OS’s can only dream of achieving.

Bottom line – Apple just took the worlds best OS and made it that much better. It may appear to be pretty much the same OS but it only appears that way.

A bargain for the price and an OS for the future

The most remarkable thing about Snow Leopard is simply that it can be installed on a Mac running Tiger. You do not need to pay the money to buy the boxed set to upgrade if you never upgraded to Leopard. This means that you can upgrade a Tiger computer to Leopard using this disk. It is up to the user to determine if they have an ethical problem with that; Apple certainly knew that this was possible when they released the software: they understand and use DRM effectively and always have. The fact it is missing here tells me that they are primarily concerned with getting Snow Leopard unto as many computers as possible as fast as possible. I am sure part of that is the desire to have Snow Leopard outperform Windows 7 which debuts in October.

So what do you get with Snow Leopard? The answer is largely performance boosts, although many of those are not really applicable (yet) since few (virtually none) third party applications use the performance gains offered by Snow Leopard. Similar to Windows 7s ability to load share between CPU and GPU, many of the changes in Snow Leopard will take several years for developers to really start to use and write programs for.

Relying on 64-bit architecture through the entire OS, Snow Leopard is essentially an upgrade for the future: as developers write programs that take advantage of the new, higher ceiling, end users like you and I will benefit. For now, most of the performance increases are only applicable to Apple’s own software. However, that’s not to say these aren’t nice or useful, and in some cases very impressive:

1) Opening large photos is faster in preview mode

2) Quicktime uses significantly less CPU on all Macs regardless of generation. Older Macs benefit the most with as much as 40% performance gains.

3) Time Machine backups take about 20% less time

4) Snow Leopard itself installs faster than Leopard

5) Boot times are faster with Snow Leopard by 5-10%; Shut down times are slightly faster as well.

6) File compression is also faster by 10-15%

Of all of these, the performance increases afforded to older first generation Macbooks are the most significant. Breathing new life into older hardware isn’t easy, especially not significant improvements. Snow Leopard manages to do just that and make even slower 1.6ghz MacBooks that much more useful.

Installation itself is a SNAP (did I mention it takes less time than Leopard?). I’ve already upgraded a MacBook and MacBook Pro, and installation was simple, fast, and easy. I plan to install Snow Leopard on another older Macbook later in the week and will upgrade this review once I have.

The few new visual tweaks are nice, but not the reason to upgrade. Better stacks is useful, as is the quickness of Finder, but overall I don’t find myself blown away by the upgrade. This isn’t an entirely new OS with a fantastic array of improvements, aside from the welcome and useful performance increases. That said, if you are a power user or just observant, you WILL NOTICE the speed increase, especially in Finder.

Snow Leopard will grow in usefulness as time passes. As I said earlier, once third party applications start to be written to take advantage of advancements in the OS, the performance overhead will become more and more useful. Expect to wait 6-12 months for that to happen, but in the mean time at least you’re enjoying speedier OS performance for an very inexpensive price!

10.6: Leopard, revisited.

I love Snow Leopard. First the caveat. I ended up completely reinstalling Mac OS after having issues with the installer on my Macbook. On my first attempt to install 10.6, the install failed about midway and my Macbook shut down. I was frantic, as I hadn’t backed up my data! I booted up, it popped out the Snow Leopard disk, and voila, booted into Mac OS without issue. Even though it had been installing 10.6 for nearly an hour, 10.5.8 was still there and everything worked as if nothing had ever happened. As soon as I ran the 10.6 installer again, it resumed where it left off. Again, it failed. I’ve since determined that the issues I was having are due to a faulty DVD drive, which I worked around.

I decided, after all of this hassle, to just back up my data and reinstall Mac OS 10.6 onto a fresh HD. So, I booted to the 10.6 DVD and wiped my drive with Disk Utility. Started the install, and it ran flawlessly. Once the dust settled, I had a year-old Macbook with a brand new operating system. I installed all of my must-have apps and everything appears to be working fine, with the exception of Perian (which is fine, I watch all of my media on a Win7 PC hooked up to my living room TV). Firefox 3.5, Adium, X-chat Aqua, Tweetie, Remote Desktop Connection all work fine.

I have Mac OS set up to auto-run Adium, Xchat, and Tweetie when I login. In 10.5.8, this added an extra 20 seconds or so to the boot process, as the applications danced endlessly in the dock until finally they popped open and the operating system became responsive. This issue is gone; in 10.6, applications open almost instantly and the OS is responsive almost immediately after logging in. A welcome, and surprising change! Also, sleeping is overall a MUCH more pleasant experience. It wakes from sleep much faster, and with much less hassle, than it did previously.

Interacting with Mac OS is more pleasant than it was before. Overall, minor speed boosts are apparent, especially when dealing with large directories of files. The MAIN IMPROVEMENT I have noticed is a reworked network sharing Finder. With 10.6, when you command-K to connect to a network share, it connects to your selected server nearly instantly, instead of the mysterious ~10 second pause that drove me mad in 10.5.8. Also, if you’re accidentally disconnected to a share while connected to a shared folder or drive, Finder won’t hang or possibly crash; it pops up a nice error message letting you know which drive(s) were disconnected, and lets you Ignore or Disconnect them. Another very welcome, and surprising, change!

Despite reading what I thought was every tidbit written about 10.6 before its release, I’m still finding minor revisions (such as the two above) that nobody had mentioned previously. For instance, in System Preferences, under the keyboard bindings option, they revised the display of the options slightly so they are easier to navigate. It’s such a minor change, but obvious upon reflection; and this appears to be what Snow Leopard is all about.

Snow Leopard’s development must have went something like this. Apple programmers use Mac OS on their own computers, and they were asked to nitpick every little quirk of Mac OS. Like, why won’t it Eject a USB drive when I ask it to? So they made a list, and made all the necessary revisions to remove these quirks. What we end up with, as users, is a refreshed Leopard, with a few new surprises once applications develops hop onboard (better use of multi-core processors, 64-bit support from the OS).

It’s still early in Snow Leopard’s life, and some applications will give you problems. Since Perian does not work, I was unable to view .mkv video files as I had previously with Quicktime… So I tried VLC. VLC is not yet supported well in 10.6 either, and it took up to 30 seconds to open a .mkv in VLC. So I’m now using Mplayer X Extended; not ideal in my opinion, but it works fine and I can live with it until developers catch up. Menumeters is missing 10.6 support as well, so at the moment I’m unable to see processor load in the menu bar, or network transfer rates :/ However, everything I NEED from my Mac is there. Chat applications work, Firefox works, and iCal works. And my experience with those apps is enhanced by a more responsive operating environment. THANK YOU, Apple, for paying as much attention to this operating system as your users do! Snow Leopard is a welcome revisit to Leopard.

While Office 2003 offered a refreshed look and some improvements in functionality, the basic structure remained the same. While veteran users were able to easily navigate the familiar menus, it had become increasingly difficult to locate some features (for instance, in Word, would you find “insert new rows” to a table in the “insert” or “table” menu?).

With Office 2007, Microsoft offers the “ribbon”, a new and more intuitive way to access features that we used to find in the menus. While the features are basically the same, they are now grouped together according to when and how you would normally use them. These groupings are accessed by clicking on tabs, which are organized in the order you’d use them. The best way to get a better understanding of this change is to check out the screenshots, or download a free trial version of Office from Microsoft. While Office 2007 was released at the same time as Vista, you do not need Vista in order to run it. The program ran fine on my Windows XP laptop, which only had 512 MB of RAM, and it runs even better on my Vista laptop with 2 GB of RAM.

As for which version of Office to buy, this is the third time I’ve opted for the Home and Student version (which has had other names in previous releases, but is still being sold for $149). I need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and this is the most cost-effective way to get those programs. I was disappointed that Microsoft dropped Outlook from the Home and Student version. In order to continue to use Outlook, I installed Outlook 2003 and haven’t had any problems.

Instead of Outlook, you get OneNote, a program that uses notebooks and tabs to save and organize all sorts of files and documents. I haven’t had much time to play with OneNote yet, but the more I use it, the more impressed I am with it. It looks like one of those programs that you can personalize to meet your own needs and not have to fight with it to get it to do what you want.

This is a significant upgrade and should allow all users, new and experienced, to work more efficiently and quickly.
