Coming from an engineering background and with good knowledge of economics, I was hoping to find a more analytical and technically oriented textbook in Mankiw’s Principles of Economics – more mathematical analyses and interesting conclusions deriving from solid theories. Instead, I find it oversimplifies highly complex issues and disregards some aspects of economics which are utterly important in a full economic evaluation. From my past experience as an engineering student and dozens of technical textbooks, this text “dumbs” down the student and leads one to “memorizing” methods in order to “understand” economic concepts. No space is left for interesting analysis involving more complex mathematical manipulations or the reader reaching new and different conclusions when compared to those exhibited in the text.As another reviewer has pointed out, not only does this seem written for high schoolers, but the complete lack of discussion concerning alternative economic theories makes this piece stand out as a free-market propaganda piece, where no government interference or interaction is the best course of “inaction” in free-market economies. Overall, it does introduce some interesting concepts in innovative ways but for someone who wants to deal with the finer aspects of and more mathematical approaches to economics I would not recommend this book.College Textbooks

I cannot say that I have read too many economics textbooks, but I think that it would be pretty hard to find one that is better than this. This textbook is for the absolute beginner. No prior knowledge of economics is needed. The author starts from scratch and works his way up without assuming anything about the reader’s knowledge. What’s even more important is that this book is fun to read. This is one of those books that you actually find yourself reading to know more. Suddenly when you reach the end of the book you will be surprised at how easy and fun economics can be and this would encourage you to move on to heavier stuff. I used this book as a self-study guide and had no problems. The best textbooks are those that deliver the message by themselves, and this certainly applies to “The Principles of Economics”.

The Beach House For Sale

James Patterson and Peter de Jonge’s The Beach House opens with the death of a handsome townie on Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons, where being a single-digit millionaire is laughable and being poor is unthinkable. Peter Mullen is a high school dropout who parks cars at the private bashes of the superwealthy Barry and Campion Neubauer. When Peter is found dead on the beach, the Neubauers and their friends insist that he drowned, but his brother Jack, a law student who saw Peter’s body, knows he was beaten to death.

As Jack uncovers evidence of his brother’s secret life, he begins to realize that the very rich are indeed different from the rest of us. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and Jack’s patiently plotted payback for Peter’s death is one that the Hamptons will not soon forget.
There are no big surprises in The Beach House, but it’s vintage Patterson, with plenty of action, villains with hearts blacker than obsidian, and a working-class hero who pulls himself up by the bootstraps. Patterson and de Jonge previously coauthored the inspirational golf romance Miracle on the 17th Green, but this new game of money, mayhem, and murder clearly suits them to a tee.

Jack Mullen is a lawyer in training. He is devastated by the death of his brother, reportedly a suicide, but apparently a murder. But the more Jack and his friends look into it, the more people around him end up dead. It comes out eventually that even those appointed to protect and serve are not always very good about protecting and serving, and this leads to a pulse pounding climax and a rather unbelievable ending televised from the tip of the Hamptons on Community Access Cable television. If you’re looking for a page turning story filled with murder, mystery and mayhem, this is a good book.

Like most Patterson books, “The Beach House” is a solid thriller that provides an entertaining read. What more can a person ask for?

Jack and Peter Mullen grew up in the Hamptons with their parents and grandfather. Now Jack has finished his 2nd year of law school and is spending the summer working for a prestigious law firm in New York, while Peter (who dropped out of high school at 15) does what he normally does – which is pander to the rich and famous, doing odd jobs to help out at parties, etc. However, everything starts to go wrong for Jack when he gets a call that Peter’s body has been found washed up on shore. Although it is frighteningly obvious to anyone with eyes that Peter was beaten to death, money equals power in the Hamptons and the official cause of death, despite autopsy results to the contrary, is ruled drowning, and all the bruises and broken bones are written off as being caused by damage in the water. I can’t tell much more than that – this much was more or less outlined in the information provided with the book, but if I tell you more, I’ll spoil it for you. Suffice it to say that Jack and his grandfather – Macklin Mullen, known as Mack – do everything in their power to try to get justice for Peter. They learn some very disturbing things along the way, and discover that not everyone they thought were their friends really were so.

If you’re looking for a solid thriller to while away a plane trip, or something to read on the beach or something like that, this is the perfect book. It is a good read and highly entertaining. Then again, I’m sort of twisted. Give it a try!

Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1972 he was awarded the American Chemical Society Award for Research in Inorganic

Inorganic Chemistry in 1993. He has been elected a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement

Arrived slightly damaged I brought this book from Amazon new. It came a day early, which was awesome because I need the book for my class, but when I opened the box some of the pages were bent back and slightly ripped. It wasn’t so bad that I felt I had to return the book, especially since my classes are starting, but It was highly upsetting to open my box to find a book that was supposed to be in perfect condition, damaged to a noticeable extent.

The Cheap Textbooks can be confusing at times but is a great text for chemistry. The text goes into a great many details most wont need but still a good book.

The text is easy to read for me, but the calculations in it aren’t explained very well. I would definitely be lost if not for the student guide that goes with this.
