I’ll admit it up front, I like Dewalt Miter Saw. I’ve had good experience with durability and reliability over the years with them. I’ve used an older style Dewalt 12′ Double bevel for years and have been very happy with it.

The most noticeable difference between the Dewalt DW716 and my old saw is the new style lever lock for setting your angles. Being accustomed to the old knob style, this will take some getting used to, but it offers a quicker method of changing positions with a tight, positive feel. The adjustable fence remains a feature and also the reasonably efficient dust collection port. Do yourself a favor, forget the little bag and hook up your shop vac or dust collection system.

DeWalt offers a number of excellent accessories for the DW716 12′ Double Bevel Compound Miter Saw including a crown molding jig and a material support, which I personally use constantly.

I find the 15 amp motor to be more than powerful for anything I “should” be cutting with this saw. I have come up with a few overly creative cuts that bogged the motor a bit, but these cuts have not been within this saws intended specs. Even then, this great saw handled them without giving up or crying.

I’ve looked hard, but can’t really find any complaints other than the nearly useless dust collection bag. Fit and finish is up to usual Dewalt standards, the handle is ergonomic, the scale is well laid out and easy to read, and it’s tough as a woodpeckers lip. There are saws with more standard features out there for around the same money or less, but you will be hard pressed to beat the durability and design of the DEWALT DW716

As a contractor I read several product reviews in The Journal of Light Construction before deciding on these products. One particular mistake I made when purchasing a DeWalt product was to over look that the drill chuck was 3/8″ rather than 1/2″–my fault! This Makita LXT211 product will accept large drill bits up to 1/2″. The drill also has a “hammer&drill” feature which is handy for light duty drilling of concrete using the proper concrete bit. The case, as is the problem with many cases, does not have any extra room for a drill index. Thankfully this case holds both a drill & impact driver which makes one less trip back and forth to my truck. The charger has a built-in fan to accelerate the charging of the two batteries. My research from the October 08′ Journal of Light Construction Magazine confirmed a smooth running, above average run time; and a comfortable grip. I owned a 2 hp 20 gallon air compressor prior to getting the Makita MAC5200 unit. I junked my old compressor after the pump gave out and was concerned about the condition of the interior (corrosion) of the 30+ year old tank. The MAC5200 is more easily transportable because of its compactness and sturdy carrying handles. This is a very quiet machine when it is running, unlike my original compressor. I will have to get use to having to stop more frequently for the tank to refill. It’s not that bad, the tank refills quite rapidly. If you want to run power tools, tools that consume 9.5 cfm of air, all day long, this would not be the compressor for you. This Makita MAC700 is the ideal compressor for the home shop. I have been building a pergola in my backyard and I started to get a little frustrated in having to run the cords down to the work area and be restricted to cord area for cuts. I already had the Makita BHP454 Hammer-Drill and the 181 Reciprocal Saw, so I had plenty of batteries to use, so I shopped around and found Amazon to have the best price on this saw. When I first put it to work, it took some getting used to – it actually had much more torque and power than I was expecting and compared to the Ryobi and DeWalt models I’ve tried, Bare-Tool Makita BSS611Z is much easier to control for smooth, accurate cuts. All of the 2x stock that I put through this saw was handled with ease, either cross, straight or bevel cut. I wouldn’t put much more than 2x into this saw though, but it will work with a good blade on 4x stock taking it nice and slow through the cut. The battery life has been better than expected – I can work for a couple hours doing many cuts on 2x without worrying about the batteries going out on me. If you already have the Li-Ion batteries and the charger, you will probably already have one or two on stand-by ready to go so you never have to wait for a charge (and even if you do have to wait, they charge quickly in the 30 minute range).

For everything that I threw at this Makita Circular Saw, it handled it all with ease. Even trickier cuts weren’t a problem, but be aware that you really need at least a couple batteries and I highly recommend a better quality blade. The stock blade that comes with the saw isn’t bad for standard cross cuts, but I was not happy with the bevel or straight cuts that it produced. I replaced it with a Freud Diablo 6 1/2 framing and finishing blades and it performed perfectly. I highly recommend this saw to anyone considering a cordless circular for mobility and maneuverability without sacrificing much in the way of cutting power.

The Makita Impact Driver is one great tool. I own 3 of them and they just keep on working without any drop in impact. I use the large batteries and they last for a long time. They work great on 8″ and shorter screws in oak beams that are hard and dry. Won’t quite put in 12″ screws in oak, but probably would in softer wood. They also put in screws without twisting the wrist like a drill driver does. I also used one to overhaul an engine and it was very useful. I’ve had one break at the handle, but it broke after the 3rd time of falling 30′ onto a hard surface. Can’t blame the tool for that. Very satisfied with makita and their tools.
By the way the broken tool is broken, but still works.
