ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook Black Reviews

I recently purchased the 1000HE netbook and couldn’t be happier with it. As soon as I got I charged it to see if the 9.5 hour battery claim was true. On that first charge I ran it from 6:30am until it completely died at 9:30pm. I did not just use the power saver settings but ran it at the high and super high levels also.

The redesign of the keyboard is excellent, even the chiclet style keys. The keys make the keyboard feel much larger than it is and the placement of the right shift key is good also.

I also installed eeebuntu on the second partition so it now dual boots so I have the best of both worlds, windows without Vista plus Linux. eeebuntu worked perfectly right out of the box, full audio, video, wireless etc., I haven’t checked out the bluetooth yet.

I’ve only had one problem, after letting it run the battery completely down it would not boot after recharging. A call to tech support got me a very nice young woman who explained that you have to unplug the power cord, pull the battery then press the little reset button on the bottom for ten seconds. This resets the bios to the factory defaults. After doing that it started right up and I’ve had no problem since. The manual did mention the reset button but did not explain how to use it.

This is my first small/ mini netbook and so far I love it. It’s functional and well designed. I have the black one so it does attract fingerprints fairly easy. I’m still in the testing stages and have yet to install a 2GB stick of ram but I know this is possible because I’ve seen it done. Asus states the battery life is 9.5 hours I have yet to have that happen it’s been more like 6h 53min to 7hr 8min. But I just received it from Amazon 2/19/2009 and this was with everything turned on and up. I have not streamed video but have watched Hulu TV on it. Looks great to me.

I received this laptop 3 weeks ago (earlier than expected, thanks Amazon), and have been very pleased. It is very fast to boot, and faster than expected in most tasks. At this point, this PC has been used mostly for watching videos, and playing web-browser based games. I have had the bluetooth and camera turned off, and spent at least 7 hours without recharging, and still had spare battery time.

For a recent camping trip, we took this laptop for my wife to do some homework, such as taking notes, etc. Prior to leaving, I loaded our 30gig mp3 collection on it, and we used it as a jukebox (note: it was plugged in to aux in the stereo).

Immediately after receiving it, I thought I would regret not having a DVD/CD player, however I have worked around the issue. In order to install a few applications from disks, I setup my desktop to “share” it’s disk drives. Once this was done, I accessed the drive through the network neighborhood, and was able to install several apps this way. In the future, I’ll consider a portable USB disk drive, but I really don’t see it imperative anymore.

Others have complained that this is heavy for a netbook, but if you have never used a netbook before (I had not prior to this purchase), the weight is not an issue. It feels like a feather compared to my Dell work-laptop.

Future modifications will include upgrading the RAM to 2gb, though it is fine with 1gb now, and making it dual-boot with Linux.

Take it from a IT professional for the last 15 years, unless you are in the top 5% of computer users who max out their system resources on their machines (hard-core gamers, video editing, data analysis), you’ll be pleased with this laptop… but then again, if you are in the top 5%, you probably aren’t even looking at this.
